AEO vs SEO

What changes when search becomes an answer — and where to spend your effort.

The verdict

SEO optimises to rank a page in a list of links; AEO optimises to be quoted inside an AI-generated answer. They are not rivals: AEO builds on SEO. Strong SEO fundamentals are the foundation, and AEO adds machine-readable structure, self-contained answers, and citation signals on top.

When SEO is the priority

If your site is hard to crawl, slow, or thin, fix that first. AEO cannot rescue content that search engines and AI systems can't read or trust in the first place. SEO is the substrate.

When AEO is the priority

If you already rank but you're invisible in AI answers — competitors get cited and you don't — the gap is AEO: structure, self-contained answers, entity clarity, and off-site corroboration.

Does AEO replace SEO?

No. AEO builds on SEO. Strong SEO fundamentals — crawlability, quality content, and authority — are the foundation AEO sits on. AEO adds machine-readable structure, self-contained answers, and citation signals on top.

Should I do AEO or SEO first?

Get the SEO substrate right first — a crawlable, fast, well-structured site — then layer AEO on top. In practice they overlap heavily, so most of the work serves both at once.
